EMPD Interdisciplinary Management Using MMS-CK7 Immunostains

For a study, researchers sought to assess the local recurrence rates and patient-reported outcomes when extramammary Paget’s disease (EMPD) is treated with Mohs micrographic surgery with cytokeratin-7 immunostains (MMS-CK7).

An academic medical center treated EMPD patients with MMS-CK7 as a part of an interdisciplinary team between 2009 and 2016 in retrospective research. Record reviews and patient surveys were used to establish local recurrence rates and patient-reported outcomes.

Using MMS-CK7, 20 cancers in 19 individuals were treated. 75% (15/20) of the malignancies underwent excision or reconstruction by a surgical colleague after MMS-CK7 identified clean microscopic margins. Seventeen individuals had internal malignancy screening by a variety of specialists, and 1 case of prostate cancer with an associated malignancy was found. With a mean follow-up of 75.2 months, no local recurrence was found. After surgery, the majority of patients were happy with their look (18/19, 95%) and function (16/19, 84%).

In-depth internal malignancy screening, low local recurrence rates, and high patient satisfaction were all characteristics of interdisciplinary teams that successfully treat EMPD.
